The Kinship Training Institute

For any type of family.

The Kinship Training Institute is here to give you the knowledge, tools, and confidence you need to support the children in your care.

Kinship care can feel overwhelming, especially when you are navigating legal systems, financial resources, and the emotional and behavioral needs of children who have experienced trauma.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

We offer free, practical, and easy-to-understand training for caregivers, adoptive parents, legal guardians, parents, and professionals so you can feel more supported and prepared every step of the way.

How We Support You

We provide a mix of live trainings, self-paced resources, and one-on-one support so you can learn in a way that works best for you.

Services include:

Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) Training

TBRI® (Trust-Based Relational Intervention®) is a proven, trauma-informed approach that helps caregivers better understand and respond to children’s behaviors and needs. It is designed specifically for children who have experienced trauma, loss, or disruption, and focuses on building trust, connection, and felt safety.

At its core, TBRI® helps shift the question from “What’s wrong with this child?” to “What has this child experienced, and what do they need?”

This approach combines attachment-based strategies, evidence-based techniques, and practical tools that caregivers can use in everyday moments. TBRI is built on three key principles:

  • Empowering Principles to meet physical and environmental needs, helping children feel safe and regulated
  • Connecting Principles to build strong, trusting relationships and strengthen attachment
  • Correcting Principles to guide behavior in a way that reduces fear and teaches new skills

Rather than focusing on punishment, TBRI® focuses on understanding behavior, meeting underlying needs, and helping children learn healthy ways to communicate, regulate, and connect.

Caregivers often find that TBRI not only improves their child’s behavior, but also strengthens their relationship and brings more calm and confidence into the home.

We offer a monthly TBRI® Caregiver Training Series with both in-person and online options.

Training Options:

  • Option 1: 3-week course (9 hours total)
    • Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
  • Option 2: 8-week course (24 hours total)
    • Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Note: The 3-week course must be completed before enrolling in the 8-week course.

Our goal is to give you tools you can use right away to strengthen your relationship with your child and feel more confident in your caregiving.
